Srinagar, May 06: Following the huge surge in cases of COVID-19, the University Grants Commission (UGC) asked the colleges and universities to suspend all offline exams for the ongoing month.

UGC Secretary Rajnish Jain in a communiqué said that the decision was taken to avoid the mass public gathering in and around the varsities.

He said, “The second wave of COVID-19 is being faced in several parts of the country and during such times ensuring safety and health of everyone is most important. Institutions across the country have already been taking best possible measures in this direction.”

“Keeping in view the current scenario of COVID-19, it is requested that Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) shall keep the offline examinations in abeyance during May 2021 to avoid physical gathering at the campuses,” Jain said.

He also said that there was a dire need to provide much-needed relief to the students, faculty and staff who are presently occupied in fighting COVID-19 in one way or other.

Jain, however, said that in order to conduct online examinations, HEIs shall  decide suitably after assessing local conditions and ensuring they are prepared in all respects and are following the protocols issued by the government and UGC.

He said, “The situation may be relooked by the HEIs during next month for taking appropriate decisions in this regard.”
