National citizenship remains an essential and enduring feature of modern life in terms of politics and elections, welfare state benefits, all round integration etc. Articles 5 to 9 of the Constitution determine who Indian citizens at the commencement of the Constitution are. Article 10 provides for their continuance as such citizens subject to the provisions of any law that may be made by Parliament.
Article 11 entrust the Parliament with powers to regulate the right of citizenship. In other words, the Constitution under Article 11 expressly left acquisition and termination of citizenship and all other matters relating thereto to the Parliament by way of legislation. The legislation related to this matter is
the Citizenship Act, 1955.
