700 SPO Vacancies in J&K Police to be filled till 15 Aug.
Director-General of J&K Police Dilbag Singh has ordered the appointment of all vacant positions of (SPOs) working with Village Defence Committees in Jammu and Kashmir.
Singh has set a deadline of August 15 for the vacant positions to be filled.
More than 700 openings for Village Defense Committee SPOs are expected to be filled in the next 14 days, according to sources.

In a big step to tackle terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, Director-General of J&K Police, Dilbag Singh has ordered the filling up of all vacant positions of Special Police Officers (SPOs) engaged with the Village Defence Committees.
Singh has ordered the vacant posts to be filled by August 15. According to reports, more than 700 vacancies of Village Defence Committees SPOs will be filled in the next 14 days.
The decision has been taken to fully re-active the Village Defence Committees as terror threat looms in the hilly areas of Jammu and Kashmir. The Village Defence Committees were first set up in the Doda region in the mid-1990s, following which they were raised in other districts of the erstwhile state.
“In view of the present security scenario, it would not be desirable to weaken the existing VDCs. It would be advisable to have SPOs from the same village where the VDC is functioning and from where the VDC SPO was disengaged,” read the official communiqué in this regard, issued by DGP Dilbag Singh and addressed to Additional DGP, Jammu Zone, Mukesh Singh.
As per the reports of District Superintendents of Police of Jammu Zone, consequent upon the dis-engagement of VDC SPOs for various reasons, 732 vacancies have accrued in Kathua, Samba, Udhampur, Doda, Kishtwar, Reasi and Ramban districts.
Doda district has the highest number of vacancies, which is 335. It is followed by Kishtwar with 180 vacancies, Reasi (94), Ramban (44), Samba (32), Kathua (31) and Udhampur (16).
The aim of the VDCs is to ensure that locals can counter-terrorism in the region. This also comes as terror activities in the Union Territory have increased in recent months. Therefore the vacant posts have to be filled up by August 15.
