NCERT to review syllabus and textbooks with aim to reduce burden on students

NCERT has decided to review its syllabus and textbooks with the aim to reduce the burden on students for a “speedy recovery” from Covid-19 disruptions.

On December 15, Sridhar Srivastava, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) director in charge wrote a letter to the heads of departments of the council. The purpose was to carry out a review of syllabus and NCERT textbooks for schools, as they plan to reduce the curriculum load on children.

What was the letter about?

In his letter, Srivastava mentioned that keeping in view the disruptions hit by Covid19, NCERT plans to make a ‘’speedy recovery’’ in students’ learning from the next academic year.

He added that NCERT should “take a step towards rationalisation of its syllabi and textbooks for the next year across the stages.”

The exercise would be carried out for Classes 6 to 12.

He has asked the heads of departments of council, to present the proposed changes by December 28.

Impact of the National Education Policy

This is not the first move in recent times regarding the syllabus and burden on students. In fact, the letter by Srivastava also refers to observations of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. (NDTV)
