Centre asks BOSE reasons for not attaining targets

Srinagar: The Ministry of Education (MoE) has said that the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (BOSE) has not been able to attain the targets fixed under National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) to award scholarship to meritorious students of economically weaker sections.

The NMMSS was launched by the central government in 2008 to provide scholarships for meritorious students of classes 9th to11th.

According to the MoE, the other motive to launch the scheme was to curtail the drop out at class 12th and encourage them to continue their study and complete secondary stage.

In a joint meeting held by the Secretary of Department of School Education and Literacy (SE&L) for MoE and Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir Arun Kumar Mehta, the BOSE was asked to assess the reasons for not attaining the fixed targets of the scheme.

“JKBOSE needs to assess why Jammu and Kashmir is not able to attain targets fixed under NMMSS (scholarship scheme) wherein scholarship is available for students who clear the prescribed Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and Mental Aptitude Test (MAT),” MoE said.

In the meeting, the MoE has sought reasons for the drop in the number of students appearing in the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Examination.

MoE said, “The reasons for the drop in the number of students appearing in the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Examination (JKBOSE) will be examined by the Chairperson of BOSE. Based on that, it will suggest measures to revert the declining trend.”
