MeT predicts light snowfall today over upper reaches

Srinagar, Jan 01: The Meteorological Department Saturday forecasted light snowfall and rains over higher reaches of Kashmir, Zozila axis during Saturday night and will continue till Sunday morning, officials said.
In the latest weather advisory, Director MeT, Sonam Lotus said they were expecting light snow over higher reaches of Kashmir, Zozila-Drass axis during Saturday evening/ night and may continue on Sunday.
While it will be followed by another spell of widespread moderate ???? h???????? snowfall likely during 4-6th Jan in both Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh regions with main activity on January 5th -6th.
Lotus said light snow is expected over higher reaches of Kashmir during January 2nd-3rd. He said there will be colder days and warmer nights from 2nd January onward.
Owing to the cloud cover, the minimum temperature improved across the valley on Wednesday night and settled above the freezing point at most places.
 Srinagar recorded a minus of 2.4 degrees Celsius on Friday night. Pahalgam recorded a minus 6.1 degrees Celsius and Gulmarg in north Kashmir settled at minus 6.0 degrees Celsius.
Qazigund recorded minus 4.0 degrees Celsius, while Kokernag recorded a low of minus 3.0 degrees Celsius and Kupwara recorded minus 1.8 degrees Celsius.
The 40 days of Chillai Kalan began on Dec 21 and is followed by 20 days of Chillai Khurd, which translates to small cold, and 10 days of chille bach (literally, baby cold).
