Sociology is the scientific study of society, which includes the patters of social relationships, social interactions and culture. The central concern of sociology is to study society as an interconnected whole. Sociology is the study of human social life, groups and societies. Its subject matter is our own behavior as social beings.
In the beginning of 19th century, a French Philosopher, August Comte, felt the need of a
separate science which could adequately study social phenomena on the basis of positive principles that could find out underlying laws. He called this science “social physics” and then in 1839 coined the term, „sociology‟, which was adopted in place of the earlier term to designate this new science.
Thus, August Comte is known as the „Father of Sociology‟. In the development of sociology as aseparate discipline, contributions of Durkheim, Spencer and Max Weber have also been remarkable.
